Although a great deal of research has been focused on executive functions, the emphasis has been on cognitive aspects of executive functions associated mainly with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In recent years, the literature on neuropsychology has shown an emerging and growing interest in the study of the emotional aspects of executive functions related primarily to orbitofrontal cortex. Orbitofrontal cortex, corresponding to the most inferior and ventral parts of prefrontal cortex, has strong connections to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and limbic system. Consequently, orbitofrontal cortex is anatomically well suited for the integration of emotional and cognitive information. Functionally, orbitofrontal cortex plays critical role in reappraisal of stimulus-reward relations, emotional decision-making, regulation of reactive aggression, extinction of fear, and emotional empathy. It is hoped that the consideration of orbitofrontal function from a wide variety of perspectives will help us gain a better understanding that emotion plays an important role in motivated, goal-directed behavior.
